Face Shading & Sculpting

Makeup Shading

A number of how-to makeup books avail at any library in the beauty and health section show how to "sculpt" your face with light and dark makeup, usu powder.

Briefly the technique goes like this: To re-shape an area decide which portion of a feature you wish to de-emphacize, then determine if it is a "highlight" or "shadow" area.

If a "shadow" area, you use light colored powder to "bring it out" or de-emphacize it. If a "highlight" area, apply dark color to accomplish the same.

Areas where this is useful: To straighten or narrow a nose, to "bring out" deep-set eyes, etc.

This technique, reversed, can also be used to _emphacize_ an area; the application rules become opposite of the above...an example would be to create a stronger or straighter jawline or emphacize weakercheekbones by strengthining the shadow below.

Use of highlight and shadow is most realistic and useful in a 2 dimentional application like photography. However, if skillfully done and without a heavy hand it can have a wonderful effect on one's appearance on a daily basis.
